ג'יימס מונרו הוא בעל דוקטורט מאוניברסיטת הרווארד. מחקריו של ג'יימס מונרו התמקדו בספרות ערבית קלאסית וספרות היספנית-ערבית. מונרו חרג במחקריו מן הגישה הפילולוגית הצרה שאפיינה בלשנים ערבים בני זמנו, הוא יצר בהם שילוב של דיסציפלינות שונות ותאוריות ממדעי החברה. כתב ספרים חשובים על המקאמות, ביניהם ספר על המקאמות של בדיע א-זמאן אל-המד'אני. וכתב מאמרים חשובים על שירת הזג'ל של אבן קוזמן. ב-1974 פרסם אנתולוגיה של שירה היספנית-ספרדית.
