אדית באלאס

ביוגרפיה
באלאס היא ניצולת שואה, לאחר שנשלחה למחנה ההשמדה אושוויץ. בספרה :"In Bird in Flight: Memoir of a Survivor and Scholar", באלאס מתארת סיפור של התמודדות עם מצבים קודרים והפיכתה למה שהיא מתארת כ"שורדת מקצועית". באלאס קראה לזיכרונותיה "ציפור במעופה" על שם הפסל המפורסם של קונסטנטין ברנקושי באותו השם. "אני רואה בזה סמל לחיי", אמרה. [1]
לאחר המלחמה נכלא בעלה על ידי שלטונות הרפובליקה הסוציאליסטית רומניה למשך שלוש שנים, שבמהלכן גידלה באלאס את שתי בנותיהן. היא קיבלה תואר שני בפילוסופיה מאוניברסיטת בוקרשט בשנת 1952. [2] לאחר מכן היגרה לארצות הברית עם בעלה, וקיבלה תואר שני בהיסטוריה של האמנויות מאוניברסיטת פיטסבורג ב-1970 ותואר דוקטור בשנת 1973.
