התמחות גסטרואנטרולוגיה

בן-ציון (בנטלי) נוביס (נולד בפרטוריה, דרום אפריקה בט"ז בשבט, תרצ"ט, 5 בפברואר 1939) הוא פרופסור אמריטוס לגסטרואנטרולוגיה באוניברסיטת תל אביב, חלוץ בתחום רפואת גסטרואנטרולוגיה בישראל. הוא הקים וניהל את המכון הגסטרואנטרולוגי בבית החולים מאיר וכיהן כיושב ראש האיגוד הישראלי לגסטרואנטרולוגיה ומחלות כבד בישראל.

קורות חייו

בן-ציון נוביס נולד בפרטוריה, דרום אפריקה, להוריו, אברהם נוביס, בעל חנות בגדים, יליד ליטא, ושרה נוביס (לבית רומיין), עקרת בית. אחיו, ריימונד נוביס, הוא רופא שיניים ומתגורר בסידני, אוסטרליה. במהלך לימודיו בבית הספר התיכון לבנים ארכדיה בפריטוריה, היה פעיל בתנועת הנוער הציונית ״הבונים״. הוא למד רפואה בדרום אפריקה והתמחה בלונדון, שם הכיר את אשתו לעתיד, קרול נוביס (לבית מטשן), ילידת וויניפג, קנדה. לאחר תקופת מגורים וסיום ההתמחות בקייפטאון בתחום מערכת העיכול ומחלות כבד (גסטרואנטרולוגיה), עלו השניים לישראל בשנת 1976 עם שתי בנותיהן, נורית ודניאלה. המשפחה התיישבה בכפר סבא, שם נולדה בתם השלישית, תמרה. נוביס הוא בין המקימים של בית הכנסת הקונסרבטיבי בכפר סבא, ״הוד והדר״ והוא פעיל בתנועה המסורתית בישראל.

לימודים

נוביס למד רפואה בדרום אפריקה ובאנגליה. בשנת 1962 קיבל תואר דוקטור לרפואה מאוניברסיטת פרטוריה (MBChB) וב-1966 נהיה חבר בקולג׳ המלכותי לרופאים בלונדון (Member of the Royal College of Physicians) MRCP את תת-ההתמחות עשה בגסטרואנטרולוגיה בין השנים 1970–1972 בהנחיית פרופסור סולי מארקס ופרופסור סימי בנק בבית החולים Groote Schuur Hospital בקייפטאון. מלבד רופא אחד, כל צוות המכון היה יהודי, ולכן כינו אותם בבדיחות הדעת, The Gastric Jews. בשנת 1972 הוא נרשם כרופא מומחה לגסטרואנטרולוגיה. בשנת 1997 נבחר כעמית בקולג׳ המלכותי לרופאים בלונדון (FRCP).

קריירה

לאחר הכשרתו בקייפטאון ובלונדון, עבד נוביס כמומחה בכיר בגסטרואנטרולוגיה בין 1973–1976 בבית החולים בקייפטאון. הוא עלה לארץ בשנת 1976 והתיישב עם משפחתו בכפר סבא. בשנת 1977 הקים וניהל את המכון הגסטרואנטרולוגי בבית החולים מאיר בכפר סבא, שהוביל בתחומו בארץ בטיפולים ובאבחונים בשיטות חדשניות. בין השנים 1984–1985 נשלח לשנת שבתון כחוקר בבתי החולים Boston City Hospital ו Deaconess Hospital המסונפים לאוניברסיטת הארווארד בבוסטון, ארצות הברית. בתום שנת השבתון הוא חזר לכפר סבא לנהל את המכון הגסטרואנטרולוגי בבית החולים מאיר עד לשנת 2004. במקביל הוא כיהן כפרופסור חבר קליני בבית הספר לרפואה ע"ש סאקלר באוניברסיטת תל אביב. לאחר פרישתו מניהול המכון, הוא מונה לרופא בכיר במשרה חלקית ומנטור של המומחים לגסטרואנטרולוגיה בבית החולים שיבא - תל השומר, שם עבד עד לשנת 2018.

הישגים מיוחדים

נוביס היה חלוץ בפעולות אנדוסקופיות אבחנתיות וטיפוליות, ביניהם:

  1. Endoscopic retrograde cholangio pancreatography
  2. Endoscopic sphincterotomy
  3. Esophageal variceal sclerotherapy
  4. Endoscopic stenting of the esophagus and of the colon
  5. Introduction of various laboratory investigations, in particular various forms of breath test analyses for diagnosis of various gastrointestinal conditions
  6. Introduction of the use of cytology in pancreatic and biliary diseases

נוביס פרסם מאות מאמרים בתחום הגסטרואנטרולוגיה בכתבי עת מדעיים נבחרים, הרצה בכנסים בינלאומיים והעמיד דור של תלמידים ההולכים בעקבותיו במחקר בתחום חקר הכבד. בימים אלה הוא מרצה אודות ״50 שנות גסטרואנטרולוגיה בישראל״, תקופה ותהליך שהוא היה חלק מהותי מהן.
