ד"ר גרשֹם לוי (Levy;‏ 4 ביולי[1]‏ 1937 – 21 במרץ 2009) היה אָרַכנולוג ישראלי שעסק במחקר טקסונומי של סדרות העכבישנים בארץ ישראל.

חייו

גרשם לוי, בנם של אירמה לבית פישר וולטר (היינץ) לוי, נולד ב-1937 בתל אביב, ומשנת 1943 גדל בירושלים. למד ביולוגיה באוניברסיטה העברית, בשנת 1964 קיבל תואר מוסמך בביולוגיה (M.Sc) (כותרת התזה: הסיסטמטיקה והביולוגיה של העכשובאים בישראל) ובשנת 1969 קיבל תואר דוקטור (כותרת הדיסרטציה עסקה במין יפרוחית, הנקרא גם סרטביש הפרחים: "הביולוגיה ותופעת חילופי הצבע של Thomisus onustus והסיסטימטיקה של משפחת ה-Thomisidae‏ (Araneae) בארץ ישראל"). גרשם לוי נישא בשנת 1964 והיה אב לשלושה.[2]

עבודתו

עבודת חייו הייתה להרחיב את אוסף העכבישנים הלאומי של ישראל ולתאר את מיני העכבישנים של ארץ ישראל והאזור הסמוך. גרשם לוי עסק בעיקר במחקר טקסונומי של עכשובאים, עקרבאים ועכבישאים (בהם לדוגמה מברישימון הערבה), ופרסם עשרות מאמרים מדעיים ומספר ספרים, בהם עריכת כרך באנציקלופדיה של החי והצומח בישראל (בעברית). מ-1978 ועד מותו היה אוצר אוסף העכבישנים הלאומי בישראל והביאו לרמה בינלאומית (הגדול ביותר במזרח התיכון).[3] גרשם לוי הקדיש את הקריירה האקדמאית שלו לקידום המחקר הטקסונומי על עכבישנים בישראל, ובמהלכה תיאר מעל 140 מיני עכבישים, עקרבים ועכשובים ומספר סוגים חדשים למדע, כולל משפחה חדשה של עקרבים (Akravidae). בזכות פועלו, אוסף העכבישנים ממשיך לשמש מדענים רבים מכל רחבי העולם. האוסף כולל ספרות נרחבת בעלת ערך מדעי והיסטורי, מאות פרטי אב טיפוס ואלפי פריטים מכל שמונה סדרות העכבישנים שנאספו מישראל ומהאזור: אקריות, זוטקרבאים, עכבישאים, עכשובאים, עקרבאים, עקרבישאים, רגלבישאים ו-Palpigradi.

גרשם לוי חקר ופרסם מאמרים על יצורים ייחודיים למערת איילון, שלא ניתן למצוא בשום מקום אחר בכדור הארץ.[4] הוא תיאר מין, סוג ומשפחה חדשה של עקרב, ללא עיניים אבל עם שערות ומסרקות, שאינו ידוע ואינו מתאים למשפחה קיימת. בעקרבים כמו גם בעקרב זה אבר החישה נמצא על הבטן והוא חש תנודות בקרקע. עקרבים דומים לאלה שנמצאו במערה, נמצאו באמריקה ובאינדונזיה בסמוך לקו המשווה אולם שם נמצאו פרטים בעלי עיניים מנוונות ואילו לאלו שבמערה לא היו עיניים.

במהלך חייו ולכבודו נכתבו מספר פרסומים מדעיים ומספר מינים של עכבישנים נקראו על שמו :
