פוליטיקה שמאלנית
פוליטיקה שמאלנית מוגדרת בדרך כלל כתמיכה בשוויון חברתי ובאיגליטריאניזם, לעיתים רבות תוך כדי התנגדות להמשך קיומן של היררכיות חברתיות.[1][2][3][4] הפוליטיקה השמאלנית בדרך כלל ממוקדת בדאגה לאנשים בחברה שנתפסים כמקופחים ביחס לאחרים וכן באמונה שיש מצב של אי שוויון לא מוצדק שצריך לחתור לצמצם או לבטל.[1]
המונחים שמאל וימין בספקטרום הפוליטי של שמאל-ימין נטבעו במקור במהלך המהפכה הצרפתית והתייחסו במקור למיקום המושבים באספת המעמדות של המשטר הישן המלוכני בצרפת - אלו שישבו בחלק השמאלי התנגדו בדרך כלל למשטר הישן ותמכו במהפכה הצרפתית, ביצירת רפובליקה דמוקרטית ובחילון של מוסדות החברה[5] בעוד שאלו שישבו בחלק הימני תמכו במוסדות המסורתיים של המשטר הישן.
במהלך המאה ה-18 המונח "שמאל" החל להיות מיוחס לתנועות פוליטיות שונות, ובמיוחד לתנועות רפובליקניות בצרפת במהלך המאה ה-18, אך במהלך המאות ה-19 וה-20 המונח החל להיות מיוחס גם לתנועות סוציאליסטיות, תנועות אנרכיסטיות, תנועות קומוניסטיות, תנועות פועלים, תנועות מרקסיסטיות, תנועות התומכות בסוציאל-דמוקרטיה, ותנועות התומכות בסינדיקליזם.[6] מאז ואילך המונח מיוחס למגוון רחב של תנועות פוליטיות,[7] כולל תנועות לזכויות האזרח, תנועות פמיניסטיות, תנועות אנטי-מלחמתיות, התנועה לאיכות הסביבה,[8][9] וכן מגוון רחב של מפלגות פוליטיות.[10][11][12]

Modern liberalism occupies the left-of-center in the traditional political spectrum and is represented by the Democratic Party in the United States, the Labor Party in the United Kingdom, and the mainstream Left (including some nominally socialist parties) in other advanced democratic societies.
