צופן ארנולד
צופן ארנולד היה צופן ספרים ששימש את ג'ון אנדרה ובנדיקט ארנולד במהלך המשא ומתן שהביא לניסיון הכושל של ארנולד למסור את וסט פוינט לבריטים בשנת 1780.[1][2][3][4]
רקע כללי
במאי 1779 יזם אלוף הצבא הקונטיננטלי בנדיקט ארנולד את מה שהפך לסדרת תקשורות עם רס"ן הצבא הבריטי ג'ון אנדרה, הסגן ומפקד הריגול של סר הנרי קלינטון, מפקד הכוחות הבריטיים בצפון אמריקה. בתקשורות אלה, שתווכו בתחילה על ידי ג'וזף סטנסברי, סוחר מפילדלפיה, הציע ארנולד את שירותיו לבריטים. אנדרה השיב להצעה זו במכתב מיום 10 במאי 1779, בו תיאר את סוגי השירותים שארנולד עשוי לספק ותיאר צופן בו עליהם להשתמש כדי לטשטש את התקשורת שלהם.[5]
הספר ששימש כמפתח להצפנה היה פירושים לחוקי אנגליה (Commentaries on the Laws of England) מאת ויליאם בלקסטון או מילון נתן ביילי. הצופן כלל סדרה של שלושה מספרים המופרדים ברווחים. מספרים אלה ייצגו מספר עמוד בספר המוסכם, מספר שורה באותו עמוד ומספר מילים באותה שורה. ארנולד הוסיף אותיות חסרות או סיומות שבהם לא הצליח למצוא התאמה באחד הספרים.[6] לדוגמה, 120.9.7 יתייחס לעמוד 120, השורה התשיעית באותו עמוד והמילה השביעית באותה שורה.
התקשורת בפועל הוסוותה לעיתים קרובות תוך הטמעתה במכתב שכתבה פגי אשתו של ארנולד, שם הצופן היה כתוב בדיו בלתי נראה, אך ייתכן והיה גם מוסווה למה שנראה כתקשורת עסקית שגרתית.
