אלה חביבה שוחט (נולדה ב-1959) היא חוקרת אמריקאית של תרבות המזרח התיכון.

ביוגרפיה

נולדה בישראל במשפחה יהודית עיראקית שבאה מבגדאד. שוחט למדה לתואר ראשון באוניברסיטת בר-אילן ולתואר שני ודוקטורט באוניברסיטת ניו יורק, אותו סיימה ב-1986. מאז היא חוקרת ומלמדת בניו יורק. כיום היא מכהנת כפרופסור במחלקות לאמנות, מדיניות ציבורית ולימודי המזרח התיכון.

במרכז מחקרה שוחט לקחה את תורתו של אדוארד סעיד בספרו "אוריינטליזם", ויישמה אותה על יחסי יהודים-ערבים ויחסי אשכנזים-מזרחים במזרח התיכון. היא בודקת את הספרות והקולנוע הישראלי בהקשר לכך. שוחט סוברת שהציונות יצרה דיכוי כפול: כלפי הפלסטינים וכלפי המזרחים, שתי הקבוצות דוכאו על ידי הקבוצה ההגמונית הציונית-האשכנזית.[דרוש מקור] היא מנסה להראות בספריה כיצד הציונות ניסתה להציג זהות "צברית" אחידה ראויה, המבוססת על התרבות האשכנזית-מערבית ולמחוק את הזהות המזרחית מקדמת הבימה, אותה היא מציגה רק בספרים ובסרטי הבורקס כדמות מגוחכת ונחותה.
