רעלני שיגה הם משפחה של רעלנים המשתייכים לשתי קבוצות עיקריות, Stx1 ו-Stx2, המתבטאות על ידי גנים הנחשבים לחלק מהגנום של פרואג'ים מסוג למדא.[1] הרעלנים נקראים על שם קיושי שיגה, שתיאר לראשונה את המקור החיידקי של דיזנטריה הנגרמת על ידי Shigella dysenteriae.[2] רעלן דמוי-שיגה (SLT) הוא כינוי היסטורי לרעלנים דומים או זהים המיוצרים על ידי חיידקי Escherichia coli.[3] המקורות הנפוצים ביותר לרעלן שיגה הם חיידקי שיגלה מזן S. dysenteriae ומספר סרוטיפים של Escherichia coli (שיגה-טוקסגני או STEC), הכוללים את הסרוטיפים O157:H7 ו־O104:H4.[4][5]
רעלן שיגה, בדומה לורוטוקסין המיוצר על-ידי E. coli, מיוחס לגרימת תסמונת המוליטית-אורמית שעלולה להיות קטלנית.[6]
